How could you avoid being coughed or sneezed on in crowded places?

You can do as they do in Japan and wear a face mask whenever you are mingling amongst the great unwashed public, and then as soon as you get home to jump into the shower and clean yourself off (wash your clothes, etc.). Or you can walk around in a complete hazmat suit including the helmet with air filter.
