Confused about a Martha Stewart ad in People magazine. Why does she have moss around the stem of an orchid?

moss is a multi purpose medium in gardens, it retains water much like a sponge , and it's pretty, And if it dies it makes good fertilizer. Peat moss is a very popular mulch. But other kinds can be used. Also moss can only grow well in acid soil. So I don't know much about Orchids except they are beautiful. And a rather tricky flower. My sister keeps hers pretty wet and doing really well... So my guess is it's a pretty way keep the moisture in the ground. See bottom link. look under watering .
